For our latest round of Artist Series Spotlight, we’re partnering with Melbourne artists to shed a light on the music scene in our city.
Originally from the western suburbs of Sydney but grew up in Melton, Waj Chok was heavily influenced by his older brother and father. Introduced to the possibility of creating his own music in 2009, Waj began to write and even learned how to create his own beats on FL Studio. He then moved on to study audio engineering in his early twenties in order to become a mix engineer.
Waj describes his style as "authentic, hip hop-y and real."
In 2020 Waj released his debut EP titled 'Mac City', in memory of Machar Kot, a young man who he considered a "little brother". Machar was sadly lost to due to a violent knife crime. Speaking on this Waj said "There's a lot of unnecessary violence going around the city which I feel is blocking us from making ridiculous gains."
"Mac City was a wake up call and I am now applying pressure to up the music quality on the scene through my record label CNM Ent. (Crow's Nest Monopoly Entertainment). Be on the look out for that genuine Aussie music." - Waj Chok
